My home pc is 1024 by 768, which I've voted for, my work lappy is 1024 by 800. I'd set my home one higher, but she moans if I do, and the lappy won't go any higher. And I reckon I probably visit TC more often on the work machine, cos I use it when I'm away, and quite often at home when she wants the pc.

I like polls - what do I get if my resolution wins?

800 x 600 and just voted. Ooh this is the sort of exciting stuff we need on a match-free Satdi.

I have no idea. Nor do I know how to find out. Sorry! (I'm over 60.)

Not sure age is the issue Mr C, I'm not over 60 but I don't know either. :-\

Wow, I just managed to find it (go to control panel appaearance & themes!) and I've voted the 1024 thing. I always thought it was 800x600 but it's increased .... no comments!   It's default though, I'd no idea how, where or what changing it could mean.

For those of any age who can't find it, right click anywhere on your desktop and choose "properties" Then click on the tab marked "settings" You'll find your screen resolution bottom left of the window, helpfully entitled "screen resolution."

Like I said, I like polls. I wouldn't want anybody to be disenfranchised!  ;)

Hey Mick, that worked  :D

Micks advice generally does.  On the old TC there were regular and lengthy threads where Mick used to hold consultation "clinics" where numpties like me were guided step by step through sometimes very complex (at least to me) techy issues.  Top man to have around - cheers Mick!

1280 x 800

Are they messable with?  I've only ever changed it once to play some old Speccy games and it whazzed up my lappy no end!

1280x800 here at home.

can be anything at work depending on machines in use, in fact I can have it over 2x1280x800 screens if I want a gap in the middle.

Yeah, they're messable with. You can move the slider in the window where you saw your screen resolution to enbiggen or ensmallen (technical terms  ;)) your display. You should click Apply, not OK - it will then give you a little message asking if you want to keep the new setting (which you can see) and will revert to the old one if you don't say yes - this stops you from choosing a setting you can't see! To be safe when doing this, select the option (if it's offered to you) to apply the setting without restarting the pc. If the option isn't offered, it should do what I described anyway. Don't click OK, this will apply the settings without giving you the chance to change your mind if you select an option the monitor can't display. This should ensure you don't whazz up your lappy!

If you want to play completely safe, click on Advanced, Monitor, and tick the box marked "Hide modes this monitor can't display" if available. That'll stop you choosing anything you can't see. You could also click on Advanced, General, and tick the box marked "Ask me before applying the new display settings." These options may not appear on every machine.

1024 x 768 at home and God knows what at work as I am expecting a new lappy. Mind you, my temp machine is using an ancient Sun monitor so is set at 800 x 600 and TC looks fine on it.

I did it! 1024x768.

But now I can't get my desktop photo of a Tornado GR4 back. How do I get it back? I hate computers!

Canada, assuming you know where on your computer you've parked your Tornado, right-click anywhere on your desktop, choose "properties" from the resulting menu, then in the window that pops up click the second tab marked "desktop" Halfway down on the right hand side you'll see a button entitled "browse" - click on that and find your hairy plane. Select it and click "ok" - job done.

If the piccie doesn't fill the desktop, go back in as before and choose "stretch" from the drop down menu immediately below the browse button.

Aha - that stretch thing is very good Mick.  That gap round the edge of the "impeccable for 34 years" wallpaper was bugging me  :)

I had to use it on my laptop, because none of the four different sizes that Pupi kindly supplied matched exactly. I've always assumed when I've seen people with gaps round the edges of their desktops that they wanted it that way!  ;)

If this carries on Mick  you'll have to change your job description from TC's "Voice of Reason" to "Font of All Knowledge" ;)
