Wow
« on: 11 February 2010, 05:02:48 PM »

Hello folks

I thought this forum had died a death a while ago and the likes of it was never to be seen or heard of again .
Its a bloody long time since I logged on to Talkingcity ( I used the userame Steve/exeter)

I stumbled accross it again after reading a post on the internet home of man city moaners and those who are never happy ( Bluemoan )

Its nice to see some familiar names , spending matchday in the chatroom before any sort of streamed link to the games was even thought about was the highlight of my week .

Hiya Avandriver. I remember your original username from BITD, but don't recollect any particular van connection.

Mrs Badger has a little van. I drive it occasionally, if that helps.

Well, we're in off topic, can't talk about football!  ;D

I drove a little Citroen van to Birmingham and back yesterday.
The M6 minged like a kipper, but you'd probably guessed that already.
I reckon that 30 of the 40 miles from Keele Services to Brum had a 50 limit due to bloody road works.

The user name comes not  from  my last job as a van driver but a local saying in Exeter where I once lived

At the time I started to flog crap on ebay I was wondering what user name to use .

If you buy something stolen up north you say it fell of a lorry but if you buy it in Exeter you say you got it from a van driver

So avandriver seemed appropriate .

I have since moved from Exeter and I am now in Bolton ( not my choice ) but it is a long sad story so I wont go in to it

Sad I know, but the night before the Bolton game I measured it, from junction 3 on the M42 to past Stoke its 58 miles of piss taking, with 2-3 sections of about 1 mile with no limit.

Last couple of night home games they also have it shut southbound around junction 15, involving a detour along the onlu other alternative for us the A500, which has yes you've guessed it about 20 miles of 50 limit because of roadworks.

Its enough to make you want to stop going (that and the football of late).

A lower national speed limit by stealth, coupled by the inevitable average speed cameras*? There's miles of them on the M1 around Sheffield, and on the M62 around Bradford/Huddersfield. Allegedly they're replacing the crash barriers and/or redoing the hard shoulder - although it's miles and miles of empty roadworks and two lanes with only a small area of work.

*Does anyone know if they work, or if anyone has been caught by these, or is it yet another example of the Govt lying to us?

Yeah-they work ,J. I know someone who got caught on a bit of the M6 just below the scottish border. The tricky thing is that it's very hit and miss where and when they set the bar for deciding to prosecute! They tend to decide on an arbitrary figure of say 57mph-then say "right we'll nick 'em all above that limit for the next 10 days". the irony is you could do 65 the week after and they may not bother!

There's a story that they are lane-specific so if you change lanes they can't get you. Could be an urban myth though.
Obviously you never know which ones "see" you so you can only risk a short spell of lane changing before slowing down.
The ones around Lids on the M62 really pig me off as there's sod all going on most of the time. The ones on the M6 that are linked to flexible speed limits with the hard shoulder as a running lane (as on the M42) may prove to be beneficial. Not as beneficial as making all busy motorways 4 lanes with HGVs banned from the two outer lanes, but that would cost money, and all spare cash must be donated to the banks.

I don't think it's that arbitrary, AFAIK it's +10%+2. So your figure of 57 is right for a 50mph limit. 50x10%+2=7   add to your original 50=57

So, in a 30 zone its 35,  70 it's 79 etc. That formula certainly applies to Gatso cameras.

Mrs T just got done for doing 36 in a 30 zone. She got off with it by attending a speed awareness group thingy. She said it was a pretty painless.

Dunno about them being lane specific Ged but it sounds plausible.

ACPO guidelines are all they are-they have no basis in law and are therefore arbitrary-that's why north wales will nick you on 34 in a 30. The only thing they're supposed to allow is the ten percent speedo error to make the conviction safer. But even that isn't solid!
When you come across a camera van-they're supposed to have a hatch open to indicate they're using speed cameras-they dont and you try arguing the toss in court by saying "the hatch wasn't open!"Again only ACPO guidelines with no basis in law.
With regard to the original point about the motorway 50 zones-they may even set the threshold higher than 57 to ensure convictions-it's up to them!
